"Alternative medicine" is still a word that is not familiar to hear. The definition of this word is discussed, however, the Japanese Society for Complementary and Alternative Medicine defines it as "generic name of scientifically unverified and clinically unapplied medicine and medical system." These medicine and remedy belong to a special field that is not taught in most medical schools and it is also not practiced at most hospitals. The alternative medicine has a wide range of medicine which includes world's traditional medicines and folk remedies. In particular, they are Chinese medicine (Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Qigong), Indian medicine, Immune therapy (Lymph cell therapy), Medicinal food/Health food, Herbs, Aromatherapy, Vitamin therapy, Diet therapy, Hotspring therapy etc. From world's population rate, it surprisingly appears that there are few people who benefit from modern western medicine. WHO (World Health Organization) classifies 65-80% of the world's health administration service by the traditional medicine. This means that when these traditional medicines are used in current western society, it is regarded as alternative medicine. |
| Recently, those who require alternative medicine are increasing more and more in the high information society such as TV and internet. In 1992, U.S. Congress established OAM (Office of Alternative Medicine) as a worldwide latest medical research institute in NIH (National Institute of Health). In 2001, the Congress has devoted resources for US$86,000,000 to this institute to work on the scientific research in this field energetically. Especially, in the U.S. alternative medicine now makes up more than 50% of the medical cost and this relates to reduction of total medical cost. This is due to the research and popularization of alternative medicine that was advanced extensively by NIH which is in the leading position in the world and is also famous for physiology and clinical study. In addition, people who adopt alternative medicine have increased to 70% in Germany and U.K. Alternative medicine is now becoming world's trend. |
