What are Vitamins/Minerals?
No one can live without taking nutrition. There are approximately 40 kinds of nutrients required to maintain our healthy body. These nutrients are classified into five categories of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals. Model image
Nutrients have 3 types, which are "the function to build cells to work on a human body", "the function to become energy for cells", and "the function related to metabolism" to make the first 2 functions operate. Metabolism is, in a manner, an intravital chemical reaction, and the substance to act as a catalyst for the smooth work of this chemical reaction is enzymes. Vitamins and minerals support the activity of enzymes.
Vitamins and minerals can be taken in by daily meals and supplements because they cannot be produced in the body. The origin of vitamin is described as vita (life) in Latin. There are 13 types of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. It would not a matter if we had too many water-soluble vitamins because the excess water-soluble vitamins are easy to be eliminated from the body. However, the excess fat-soluble vitamins may cause a problem because it is easy to accumulate in the body.
In contrast to vitamins that are chemical compounds of lots of elements, mineral is a single component that exists as minerals. Essential minerals consist of 16 kinds, which are 7 microelements and 9 accessory elements. However, some has a possibility of developing poisoning symptoms so that this has to be treated with much attention than vitamins. In regard to the intake of vitamins and minerals, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) made a guideline of their nutritional requirements.
