The increase of children's "solitary meal"

According to a survey in 2005 conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 40.9% of first to third graders, 40.3% of fourth to sixth graders and 42.5% of junior high school students eat breakfast only with other children, such as their siblings. The figures above have sharply increased when compared with results from a 1988 survey illustrating that 26.8% of first through third graders, and 29.0% of fourth through sixth graders eat breakfast with other children. 57.2% of elementary and junior high school students parents stated, "I want to improve students' eating habits" on the survey, which may explain the increase.

The polarization of elementary and junior high school students' body types were split into two categories "overweight - growing too obese" and "thin- becoming too lean". As for women, the rate of being overweight decreased for women in their 40's to their 70's and about 20% of women in their 20's and 30's were underweight.
