Development Bank of Japan made a report public on June 15th, regarding an overview of the Japanese battery industry.
Japanese battery manufacturers occupy more than half the market share of lithium ion battery output. These batteries most likely will be installed in the next generation of electric vehicles. Approximately 80% of manufactured batteries are produced by factories in the Kansai area, which is called ‘The battery plant of the world’. When it comes to the market share of solar battery and panels, 20% goes to Japanese manufacturers and 70% of its domestic output is from Kansai.
The report says the issue, for the globally predominated battery industry in the Kansai district, is to form a coalition with auto industries in the Tokai area. A hybrid car from Toyota Motor Corp. uses parts of solar batteries produced by Kyocera in the Shiga prefecture, assembled in the Mie prefecture and installs them in their factory in the Aichi prefecture. This is an example of the ideal cross-area collaboration for manufacturing new types of hybrid vehicles.
Toyota Motor Corp., the global giant in the auto industry’s main manufacturing plant is located in the Aichi prefecture of the Tokai area. Recently, Toyota announced they have already received orders of 180,000 units for their newly introduced hybrid vehicle PRIUS, which is 18 times more than their monthly sales goal. Their high fuel-efficient and reasonable prices (starting from JPY 2,050,000) are the main reasons for the growing popularity. Also, the government program, cutting taxes for people who purchase environmentally friendly automobiles, increased the demand.
