The major topics and the top-selling items for the first half of 2009
| DENTSU INC., the leading corporation of advertising and marketing communications in Japan, recently announced the ratings of the top selling items for the first half of 2009. Face mask products headed the rankings due to the recent pandemic of the swine flu. Commodities with an economical advantage, such as hybrid vehicles that are entitled to receive tax reductions and expressway discounts for weekend drives, received high general-support. According to this study, consumers used their summer bonus to purchase commodities such as TVs for terrestrial digital broadcasting and energy-saving appliances (air conditioners and refrigerators), which entitle the purchaser to Eco-points. Shopping at outlet malls, overseas travel, which became less expensive due to the appreciated yen, and low-priced clothes also made the list. Since this year's summer bonus is expected to be reduced compared to last year's, 'economical' seems to be the keyword for the summer sales battle. The research study was conducted through the web, May 22 to 24, targeting both male and female between the ages of 20 to 69 throughout Japan. The study allowed the subjects to choose between 100 pre-selected items and services.
