2009 Best sellers on-line
|For the first time in its history, a popular Japanese on-line shopping site, Rakuten Market, has published a list ranking their best selling items for 2009 Rakuten Market is the largest cyber mall in Japan with sales of approximately 760 billion yen (8.4 billion US$). This virtual mall offers a variety of commercial products from luxury items to groceries and due to the on-line access; these items are available to everyone no matter where they live in Japan. The rankings reflect how events of 2009 affected consumers’ buying behavior of on-line shopping users.
The various items were ranked similarly to the Japanese sumo wrestlers’ rankings. There are two grand champions in sumo wrestling one in the East and one in the West, this is called Yokozuna. The East Yokozuna of Rakuten were the items related with the 1,000 yen express way (this is a special discount for toll fees on weekend), which includes ETC (Electronic Toll Collection system) and car navigation systems. The West Yokozuna were electric appliances with eco-point; such as flat screen televisions, air conditioners, etc.
Other than the two mentioned above, there were many unique items in the ranking. Reflecting the popularity of Sugomori (stay home), cooking devices like bread-baking machines and confectionery making tools are ranked the Ozeki, which is the second highest in the ranking. Items for joggers like stylish sports clothes, especially for lady joggers were ranked the Sekiwake which is the third highest rank in Banzuke (the official ranking list of sumo).
