2009 hot sellers at on-line shopping mall
| A popular Japanese on-line shopping mall, Rakuten Market, have published the ranking of hot selling items transacted on its Internet mall in 2009 first time in its history. Rakuten Market is the largest cyber mall in Japan with the transaction amount of approximately 760 billion yen (8.4 billion US$), offering a variety of commercial products from luxury items to grocery to everyone across the country no matter where they live in Japan. The uniqueness of the ranking is to reflect what happened and how it affected consumers’ buying behavior from the objective purchasing data on broad-based on-line shopping users. The items were ranked as if they are in the Japanese sumo wrestlers’ rankings. Yokozuna, there are two grand champion in sumo in the East and the West and they are the highest of the ranking. The East Yokozuna of Rakuten was the items related with 1,000 yen express way (a special discount for toll fee on weekend), which includes ETC (electronic toll collection system) and car navigation systems. The West Yokozuna was an electric appliance with eco-point; such as a flat screen TV, an air conditioner and so on. Other than these, there were lots of unique items in the ranking. Reflecting the popularity of Sugomori (stay home), cooking devices like bread-baking machines and confectionery making tools are ranked the Ozeki, which is the second highest in the ranking. Items for joggers like fancy and stylish sports clothes, especially for lady joggers what we call Bijogger (Bi means beautiful in Japanese), was ranked the Sekiwake which is the third highest rank in Banzuke (the official ranking list of sumo).
