MEGAMI is a Food with Function Claims featuring three functional claims. Astaxanthin helps prevent skin dryness and maintain skin moisture, maintain normal eye focusing function, and maintain visual memory, which is one aspect of cognitive function (*).

(*) Visual memory refers to the ability to recognize, remember, and recall shapes.

Astaxanthin is a type of naturally occurring pigment known as a carotenoid, found in fish such as salmon and salmon roe, crustaceans such as shrimp and crab, and algae such as Haematococcus. This product uses astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus algae.

As of July 2026, the product name has changed from Astarella to MEGAMI. The formulation remains unchanged.

This product contains astaxanthin. Astaxanthin has been reported to help maintain the eyes' focusing function, reduce temporary eye fatigue caused by the use of computers, smartphones, and similar devices, and alleviate strain on the shoulders and lower back associated with eye use. It has also been reported to help maintain visual acuity in people aged 40 and over who use computers, smartphones, and similar devices. However, it does not improve refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Astaxanthin has also been reported to help retain skin moisture and maintain skin hydration.

Furthermore, it has been reported to help maintain visual memory (the ability to recognize, remember, and recall shapes), which is one aspect of cognitive function, in healthy middle-aged and older adults who feel that their memory is declining.

This product has been notified to the Commissioner of the Consumer Affairs Agency as a food product labeled with specific health benefits under the responsibility of the business operator. However, unlike Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU), it has not undergone individual evaluation by the Commissioner of the Consumer Affairs Agency.

Natural Astaxanthin is a vibrant red-orange pigment found in salmon, krill, and other seafood. It got its name from the American lobster (Astacus gammarus L.), where it was first discovered.

It’s classified within the xanthophyll group of carotenoids.

Currently, the primary source for the supplement astaxanthin is the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. This algae is originally green in color, but transforms into a striking red hue when exposed to harsh conditions, producing astaxanthin as a protective mechanism. The pigment is harvested during this phase, capturing its peak potency.

You may not often hear the name astaxanthin, but it’s present in everyday foods like such as salmon and sea bream.
